An article by Ricky Espinosa in American Libraries provides calculations for assessing the space needed for collections growth when planning a library move

Designing Libraries has often been asked if there is a formula for calculating the space needed for collections and other materials when planning a library relocation. Now Ricky Espinosa has come up with a structured approach to planning that takes account of historical growth, potential growth and available space.

Importantly, he takes into consideration many additional factors often overlooked in the space planning process, such as trolleys, returns boxes, step ladders - and points out the need to aim for a rational workflow and helpful customer journey.
