Pork Pie library reopens

The old Southfields Library, known locally as the ‘pork pie’, recently underwent a big transformation and was re-launched as the Pork Pie Library and Community Centre.

The much-loved grade two listed building has been redeveloped to offer a range of local services under one roof. As well as a fully-refurbished library, the centre now offers a range of community activities, room hire and an Adult Learning Centre.

New facilities include a restored theatre, a community kitchen, and a state of the art computer and technology suite.

A new heating system and energy-efficient lighting have been installed to reduce carbon emissions.

Original features such as the parquet floor and the central skylight have also been restored. The building, which has free computer and WiFi access, can be hired out by the community.

Cllr Kirk Master, assistant city mayor for neighbourhood services, said: “By relocating services under one roof, it is possible to get the most out of the building while ensuring that people have one convenient neighbourhood location where they can take part in lots of different activities."
