The restoration of Norbury Library

Bisset Adams was appointed by Croydon Council to develop design guidelines for their library network. As part of a team, Bisset Adams developed a strategy and approach on how to modernise and elevate the status of the library network. The guidelines covered a number of design disciplines such as architecture, interior design, graphics and signage.

Two very different libraries were identified as pilots. Selsdon Library was the initial pilot, then Norbury Library followed. The Norbury Library project was about restoration and how to modernise an old, locally listed building, which was underutilised because of poor accessibility.

The interior design of the space had to be sympathetic to the period of the building, yet still incorporate the design essence set out in the guidelines. All space planning aspects and interior design were undertaken by Bisset Adams, who already had a reputation for the sympathetic restoration and modernisation of heritage library buildings, and the furniture was installed by thedesignconcept.

Capitalising on our library heritage

Libraries sit at the heart of communities. Far more than just books, they play a vital role in promoting health and wellbeing, support learning and development, and bring people and communities together in a celebration of culture.

Norbury Library is no exception. Part of Croydon Council’s Library Transformation Programme, this 1930s locally listed library, has now been beautifully refurbished, providing bright, welcoming, accessible spaces that support the delivery of council services closer to home.

New additions include:

A welcoming new café, and accessible community facilities supported by the installation of a new lift.

A vibrant new children’s library for young readers and families.

Technology-enabled workspaces, helping students, small businesses and residents get online.

The building’s original features have also been restored, including an elegant vaulted ceiling, roof lights, and parquet flooring.
