Doncaster's new library opens virtually

Packed with an incredible array of eye-opening exhibits, fascinating historical items and carefully restored features from the former Doncaster High School for Girls, the online tour will be the next best thing to going inside the building. Visitors will also be able to view the contemporary new library for the first time in its impressive open plan setting on the ground floor.

The design and furnishing of the library were undertaken by Opening the Book, who were involved from the start of the project in 2017 as part of the team, working with the architect. Opening the Book created and furnished the makerspace, shop, café, education room, conference and training rooms as well as the navigational signage and manifestations for the whole building. Rachel Van Riel, Director, said: “We created a discovery layout in the main library with our trademark flowing shapes and big curve desks. We worked with library staff to map the stock layout onto that and to create detailed merchandising plans. The views from one floor to another were a particular feature we worked to make the most of.”

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “Nothing can compare to actually visiting the building, however this digital experience will offer an interactive tour round all four floors allowing people to stop, look and hear about the collections, exhibits and the inspiring learning spaces.”

DGLAM should open its doors later in the year when it’s safe to do so given the current Covid-19 emergency.
