Transforming Wolverhampton Central Library

A sympathetic refurbishment of a Grade II-Listed Carnegie Building

Wolverhampton Wolves Library White Bookshelves

Wolverhampton Central Library is a rare Grade II-listed Carnegie building, an architectural landmark with deep cultural significance. When the library team embarked on a refurbishment of its 315 sqm public space, as part of the £61m regeneration project of Wolverhampton’s Learning Quarter, they needed a partner who could balance modern functionality with heritage sensitivity.

This case study showcases how we delivered a thoughtful, seamless, and future-ready transformation that respects history while elevating the modern user experience.

Understanding the vision

Our journey began with an onsite meeting with Chief Librarian Robert Johnson to clarify project goals and understand how diverse user groups interact with the space.

Together, we carried out:

  • A full review of the building’s physical characteristics to identify constraints and opportunities.
  • A manual stock verification, counting, measuring, and clearing shelving to optimise layout and book capacity.
  • A detailed mapping of activities and user flows, considering containment, sill heights, adjacent rooms, and movement patterns.

This early stage ensured every decision was informed, intentional, and aligned with the library’s long-term needs.

Designing with sensitivity and precision

Using immersive visualisation tools, we transformed 2D concepts into highly accurate 3D models. This allowed stakeholders to clearly see the space before installation began, improving communication, speeding up approvals, and reducing misunderstandings.

Throughout the design and installation, we worked closely with the project management team to coordinate our fit-out with the broader refurbishment works.

This included:

  • Aligning our installation sequencing with construction timelines
  • Carefully timing deliveries to avoid city-centre congestion
  • Ensuring a seamless workflow alongside other onsite contractors

Our friendly, detail-focused fitting team ensured every piece of shelving and furniture met precise specifications for alignment, stability, and long-term safety.

Challenges and tailored solutions

Designing for a Grade II*-listed building presents unique considerations and we embraced the opportunity to innovate respectfully.

1. Protecting historic fabric
To avoid affecting the original structure, we proposed modular, non-invasive furniture solutions that are fully manoeuvrable.

2. Limited containment
The building’s constraints required smart, unobtrusive integration of modern digital infrastructure.

3. Colour sensitivity
We curated a calm, sympathetic palette of whites and greys, accented by richer tones in soft furnishings, ensuring harmony with the building’s traditional character without appearing bright or garish.

4. Bespoke workspaces
We created custom workspaces around a central feature column, offering users a comfortable hub for personal devices as well as dedicated computer stations within acoustic pods for quieter, private study.

5. Everna shelving system
We introduced Everna bookcase-style shelving that combines practicality with creativity. Its layout enhances supervision through clear sightlines, improving security and user comfort.

A space that inspires, honouring history, enhancing experience

The result is a traditional yet thoughtfully modernised library environment that maintains full book stock without compromise. Impressively, the very first design proposal met every project goal, no revisions required.

From celebrating architectural heritage to ensuring 21st-century usability, the refurbished Wolverhampton Central Library stands as a testament to how sensitive design and practical innovation can coexist beautifully.

Outcome

  • A future-ready space that respects its historic setting
  • Improved user navigation, comfort, and study provision
  • A design that required no revisions due to early clarity and strong collaboration
  • A seamless installation aligned with broader refurbishment works

Wolverhampton Central Library now offers a refreshed, welcoming environment that continues its legacy as a vibrant community resource.
