Macmillan Hub Library - North Edinburgh Arts

The Macmillan Square Regeneration Project is a key part of one of the most significant urban regeneration projects in Scotland, tackling poverty and inequality in the area. The Hub is the flagship building on the new Macmillan Square which hosts up to 150 affordable homes and 13 new retail units. 

A shared entrance to the library, early learning centre and North Edinburgh Arts building means that visitors to one will have the chance to enjoy all three as the lines between each have been intentionally blurred. Bringing people together is an important focus for the community hub and this is encouraged by the building's clever design. 

The library is a two-level space with books on the ground floor and a skills base above. There are shared spaces with the early years centre and the arts centre. large windows facing on to the square give views to the left of the arts centre and library to the right.

The selection of shelving and furniture for the library was pivotal in creating a harmonious yet functional environment that reflects the ethos of the Macmillan Hub project. The shelving systems are designed to be flexible and modular, allowing for the library's evolving needs. With open layouts and adaptable units, the space encourages exploration and interaction.  
The shelves themselves are crafted from sustainable materials, lending warmth and durability while complementing the natural light flooding in from the large windows thanks to the amazing architectural design of the hub. The rich wood tones are offset by modern accents, including metal fixtures that echo the industrial heritage of the area, bridging past and present in a subtle, cohesive way. 

The furniture was chosen with equal care, balancing comfort, aesthetics, and practicality. Bespoke items are made to have the same oak finishes as the rest of the library, ensuring continuity in material and tone. The chairs are upholstered in soft, muted fabrics that evoke a calming atmosphere, with pops of deep greens and blues to inspire creativity. The colour palette throughout the library was carefully selected to create a welcoming space for all ages—earthy hues, alongside splashes of vibrant colour, mirror the natural surroundings and foster a sense of community and belonging. Each element, from the shelves to the seating, was designed not just to serve a purpose but to reflect the project's broader mission of connectivity, inspiration, and lasting impact. 

It's a beautifully considered building with community use and ease of access at the very heart of the design and delivery. The multi-purpose nature of the Macmillan Square development is one of its biggest strengths. Through a joined-up approach, attention to detail and understanding of the importance of design choices a magnificent place has been delivered and an invested in for the community of Pennywell.
