Henley Library, Henley-on-Thames
Henley Library underwent a comprehensive refurbishment to transform it into a vibrant, accessible, and community-centred hub

About the Project
In collaboration with Oxfordshire County Council and the local Henley team, FG Library & Learning delivered a 12-week transformation that reimagined the library environment with modern functionality, local character, and community spirit at its heart.
Design Inspiration: Character and Community
A defining element of the project was the emphasis on embedding âCharacter and Communityâ into the design. The objective was to reflect Henleyâs rich local heritage and natural beauty throughout the space. To achieve this:
- A local photographer was commissioned to capture bespoke images of Henley, showcasing notable landmarks, river scenes, and areas of interest.
- These photographs were carefully curated and integrated into the design, informing the look and feel of display areas and newly developed information boards.
- Visual storytelling through local imagery now plays a prominent role in both wayfinding and ambiance.
Children’s Area: A Space for Imagination
The childrenâs area drew strong inspiration from Henleyâs surrounding environment, particularly the River Thames and local parks. Design features include:
- Playful elements such as stylised trees and boats, fostering a connection with the outdoors.
- A bespoke carpet design that evokes the flow of the river and green parkland, adding texture and narrative to the flooring.
- Interactive and age-appropriate furniture and displays encourage young visitors to explore and learn in a space designed just for them.

Key Enhancements
- Agile Shelving Solutions: Flexible shelving allows for better spatial adaptability and reconfiguration to meet the needs of different user groups and events.
- Community-Inspired Displays: Custom display and information areas integrate the locally commissioned photography and enhance engagement.
- Sustainable Design Choices: The redesign includes greener, energy-efficient features contributing to a more sustainable environment.
- Welcoming Environment: A focus on natural light, colour, and space has created a more open and inviting atmosphere.
Final Word
Henley Library officially reopened to the public on 8th April 2025, revealing a brighter, greener, and more dynamic space. The refurbished library now provides a richer user experience, rooted in the identity of Henley-on-Thames, and serves as a welcoming destination for learning, interaction, and community engagement.
