The design brief was to create a light, bright, modern and attractive service with a distinct retail style feel, using face-on display and book promotion features.

The extension works have included a community meeeting room, accessible toilet with babychanging facilities and a car park including two disabled parking spaces.

The front wall of the building has been replaced with a large glass fronted 'shop window' with artworks and there is a roller shutter for when the building is closed, which also features artwork.

The interior is 'zoned' into themed areas such as 'text4u' (teenage) and surf and search. There is a colourful children's area with special lighting and a listening post, and there are two listening posts in the a/v area with a DVD viewing point and also a Playstation.

There is clear signage internally and externally and on approaching the building there is level access with tactile paving.

The library has good tonal contrast throughout and makes excellent use of natural light. The majority of the stock is housed on low level shelving which can be moved around.

A design feature is an hexagonal quick choice area which also features an Elizabeth Frink sculpture of a miner's head.
