Designing for people

Human City’s Managing Director is Gemma John, who says: “Our clients include public and private property owners as well as architecture and design teams who want to create inclusive places by strengthening community partnerships and attract diverse audiences.

“By building relationships with local actors and decision-makers, we gather insights into what people want from the spaces in which they live and work, and use these insights to more effectively design and operate new and existing spaces. We also measure social impact, and assess the financial value of the new buildings and experiences that you create.

“For the last five years we have been bringing our perspective as award-winning social scientists and experience designers to help clients build prosperous communities on both small and large scale projects through:

  • Community engagement
  • Spatial strategy
  • Experience design
  • Social impact analysis
  • Financial evaluation”

An anthropologist, Gemma John specialises in illuminating the changing ways in which people live and work in cities, and how social value in the built environment can be delivered at a time of technological disruption. In 2015, she was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and British Council Fellowship to research the design and use of public libraries.
