The current building was deemed “beyond any form of economical repair”, prompting the Bridgend County Borough Council cabinet members to agree on the relocation of the lending library to the council’s Raven’s Court building in Brewery Lane, while the reference and information library will move to the former T’r Ardd building in Sunnyside, which will also house Bridgend Register Office.

The Grade-II listed library and its associated buildings on Park Street were described as being “in a very poor state of repair exacerbated by the recent bad weather and rodent infestation” in a council report last March.

The council did not have sufficient funds for the necessary work, which would include re-roofing the main house. The listed status, and conservation laws, dictate that the main building cannot be demolished or drastically altered and the council has set design principles to respect the character and setting in enabling its restoration and repair.

Plans were lodged last February to move Bridgend and Coed Park libraries into the Recreation Centre as part of a £6m scheme, but the meeting heard the resources were not currently available to pursue this option.
