A landmark, multi-functional building, incorporating the library, the distribution headquarters for the city's branch library network, mobile library headquarters and a bibliographic processing service.
The exterior appearance was designed to reflect the library's status as a major feature of civic importance.
The distinct functions of the two levels within the building are emphasised by a change of materials.
A simple square deep plan was adopted for the interior layout, all enclosed spaces located to the rear allowing an open and flexible library area in a U shape around the library desk, increasing visibilty from the outside and the management of traffic flow and quiet areas.
