Helsinki Central Library

The Hesinki library is set to become one of the most prestigious library projects of recent times.

The jury described the contorted wooden structure as 'impressive and casually generous' and an excellent starting point when it comes to developing new kinds of library functions.

The decision of the jury was unanimous. It was described as 'a fantastic, ecologically efficient modern wooden house in the centre of Helsinki.'

'The demands on ecological efficiency were especially high in this architectural competition,' said Deputy Mayor Ritva Viljanen, who was chair of the jury. 'The architecture of the building must stand up to time and be right for the location opposite the Parliament House.'
