Refurbishment of Blackburn Central Library begins

Blackburn Central Library is to have its original 1930s facade restored in a £2m refurbishment programme.

24 April 2013

This month work has begun on the removal of the crumbling 1970s concrete facade hiding the original architecture of what was originally the Blackburn Co-operative Emporium department store, restaurant and ballroom.

Those were the days! And times continue to change, with plans to combine the restored architectural heritage of the building with a modern interior to provide a 21st century library service and community hub, with the aim of reversing the decline in traditional usage.
