The new Stuttgart City Library

Designed by architect Eun Young Yi, it looks like a complicated two colour Rubik's cube puzzle from the outside, but is simplicity itself inside.

Books dominate, and set the style. But the quirkiness of what appear at first to be randomly arranged staircases is a distinctive design feature.

The architects chose to physically express the importance of this cultural centre by giving the building a grand physical presence. The building takes the form of cube with an edge length of 45 meters.

The gallery hall is a five-story space, square-shaped and surrounded by a shell of books...
