Harrow Green, working with sister company Restore, is the UK's leading specialist in library relocation, archive moves and interim storage projects.
Planning ahead for library moves
Harrow Green leads on library moves, with over 30 years’ experience of packing and handling general and special collections, artefacts and rare or precious items. Libraries trust us with their collections because of our experience, expertise and track record of delivering successful projects.
Our library and archive experts have skills and knowledge in wrapping, packing and moving books and materials, sequential moving, shelf re-pitching, Dewey, Congress and Binary classification systems, including merging and separating book collections.
If there is a need for storage, we provide National Conservation Service (NCS) approved heritage storage facilities, implement speedy retrieval services and offer disposal of unwanted books through charity partners.
Every project we undertake benefits from one of our library and archive experts visiting the site, carrying out a survey and speaking to key stakeholders to understand their requirements and desired outcomes, the nature of the materials to be relocated and to help them create a detailed plan and methodologies unique to the project.
Our expert survey ensures that the right materials and the right equipment, including any special elements such as acid free paper and bespoke crates, are in place for taking care of each and every item. Our experts know how to safely pack and move books, archival documents, paintings, media and visual materials and other holdings.
As part of the move we will measure and map library spaces and shelves so that the shelving in the new location is correct for the stock being relocated. Working in close partnership with librarians and archivists our experts have gained a good understanding of different classification systems (including Dewey, Congress and Binary), indexing and tagging. This is critical to successful sequential moving of collections of books.
We also provide NCS approved heritage storage facilities which meet the stringent requirements of PD5454:2012. The space available is highly adaptable and has cutting edge technology in place to control the environment. Flexible contract terms and a quick retrieval service are added benefits.
